Airbnb Boomers leave it late to defeat Finland

The Airbnb Australian Boomers have begun their pre-2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup tour with a hard-fought 100-95 win over Finland in Klaipeda, Lithuania overnight.

It took some late heroics from 2012 London Olympic Games star Joe Ingles to ensure the Airbnb Boomers would make a winning start to the European preparation, nailing a monster three-pointer inside the final minute to ensure victory.

Airbnb Boomers Assistant Coach Luc Longley said the rust after a long journey was evident, but was pleased with the way the players stuck to their task and grinded out a win.

“As expected after a long travel schedule and only one day here in Lithuania, we were very rusty,” Longley said.

“The thing they did best was just hang in there – they stuck to their plays, stuck to what they were doing and fought, because the way the Finns were shooting and the way that we were playing it was going to be a tough one.”

Just a day after a 48-hour journey from Australia to Eastern Europe, the Airbnb Boomers struggled to match the Finnish physicality early and trailed by 13 points midway through the second quarter.

Staring down the barrel of a significant halftime deficit, the Airbnb Boomers began to adjust and quickly whittled the Finnish lead to just three points at the main break, trailing 47-44 in a high-scoring first half affair.

This trend continued, but it was Finland who would light up the score sheet, dropping 35 points for the quarter to establish an 82-72 lead, with the Airbnb Boomers needing final quarter heroics to salvage the tough situation.

With their backs against the wall, the Airbnb Boomers quickly ate away at the Finnish advantage, taking the lead for the first time since the opening quarter in the closing minutes.

The Ingles three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining sealed the come-from-behind win, capping off a gritty performance from the team and a team-high 20 points for the 26-year-old.

The rise of Brock Motum’s star continues, with the Queenslander and star of the Sino-Australia Challenge against China, posting 17 points, while veteran Brad Newley was instrumental with 15 points.

Young Airbnb Boomers star Dante Exum suffered a minor ankle sprain, but the injury isn’t expected to impact his availability for the tour. He will be monitored to determine his availability for the game against Ukraine tonight AEST.

The Airbnb Boomers face Ukraine TONIGHT at 11:15pm from Klaipeda, Lithuania 11:15pm, with fans able to watch the action LIVE on SportoTV.
