Gauci was born on January 1 1985 with lumbar sacral agenesis, meaning that she was missing the lower part of her spine.
She began competing in basketball competitions as an 11-year old and was inspired to play for the Gliders after seeing them at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics.
While still a member of the New South Wales women's junior representative team, Gauci played with a New South Wales State team in a warm-up game against the Gliders in the lead up to the 2000 Summer Paralympics and she then became a well known name in the WNWBL.
Gauci played for the Hills Hornets in 2000, named the 2.0 MVP before going on to be named in the All-Star Five every year from 2001-05.
In 2006 she made the switch to the Norths Bears, and was again named the 2.0 MVP while extending her All-Star Five nominations in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
She also also competed in the NWBL while at international level, Gauci first played for an Australian junior team as a 14-year old.
Joining the Gliders in 2002 as a teenager, she played in a four-game test series in Canberra against Japan, the first Australian hosted international since the Paralympics and Gauci was then selected to play for Australia at the 2002 World Cup.
Going on to represent the Gliders at the 2002, 2006 and 2010 World Championships, she helped them to fourth-placed finished while she is a three-time Paralympic medalist thanks to her efforts at the 2004 Paralympics (silver), 2008 Paralympics (bronze) and 2012 Paralympics (silver).
She was named to the World All-Star Five at the World Championships in 2006 and has played close to 200 games for her country.
