BOOMERS AND OPALS TEAM NAMED FOR GOLD COAST 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Commonwealth Games Australia has today announced both the Men’s (Boomers) and Women’s (Opals) Australian Basketball Teams for next month’s Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The teams were announced by Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games star Lauren Jackson.

In the Boomers side – a familiar line-up from the FIBA World Cup qualifiers has been announced, with Chris Goulding and Damian Martin added to the team.

bRAD Newley is the only Boomer to have competed at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and said he was honoured to be announced again to represent Australia on the Gold Coast.

“To be named to pull on the green and gold in a month’s time is truly special,” Newley said. “We have seen the strength of these players throughout the NBL season this year and I believe we will all work together strongly in April.

"A Games on home soil is a great thing, I got to experience it in Melbourne in 2006 but I know all the boys are looking forward to it.”

Every WNBL club will be represented in the Australian Opals’ 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games team.

Australian Opal & WNBA star Liz Cambage has been named in the Opals team to compete in April and said they will be aiming for Gold.

“The Team won Gold at the Melbourne Games in 2006, so we will be really striving to achieve this again,” Cambage said.

“To pull on the Green and Gold is always brilliant but to do it on home soil will be even better.

"We (basketball) haven’t been a part of the last couple of Commonwealth Games but now we are, so we are really looking forward to the competition.”

From 5 April 2018 world class basketball competition will hit North Queensland for the Commonwealth Games preliminary matches and qualifying finals.

The competition then heads to the Gold Coast where the medals will be decided.
