Signalling the exciting start of a new era in FIBA tournaments and qualification processes, Australia begin their first foray into Asia with the Oceania region now defunct.
With NBA and some European players unavailable, a heavy NBL contingent will represent the Boomers at the FIBA Asia Cup with a number of players making their debut in the green and gold.
All Australian NBL clubs are represented with three players coming from Sydney Kings, two each from Adelaide 36ers, Illawarra Hawks and Cairns Taipans while Melbourne United, Perth Wildcats and Brisbane Bullets are also featured.
As announced by FOX Sports last night, they have bought the exclusive television rights to EVERY Boomers and Opals FIBA tournament until 2021, starting with the FIBA Asia Cup.
You will be able to catch every group game on Fox Sports channel 507 and the finals will also be broadcast LIVE with the channel to be confirmed.
The Boomers have been drawn into Group D where they will be pitted against Japan, Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei on Tuesday night, Thursday night and Saturday night respectively.
After those three contests, the top three teams will move on but if Australia can finish on top of their group, they will advance directly to the Quarter-Finals on August 16 while the other two teams will battle for their place in a qualifying Quarter-Final.
Beyond that, the tournament enters a knockout phase with the bronze and gold medal games scheduled for August 20.
The winner will hold aloft the FIBA Asia Cup trophy and be crowned the Champions of Asia but there is no qualification for tournaments beyond this, with the Boomers next hitting the courts in November where they will begin their qualification process to the FIBA World Cup in 2019.
