GEELONG TO HOST U18 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AND KEVIN COOMBS CUP

Basketball Australia is excited to reveal the location of the Under-18 Australian Championships and Kevin Coombs Cup with Basketball Geelong hosting the event from April 21-28.

Over 100 games will be played across eight days with every state and territory represented through the three competitions.

Many of Australia’s future stars are discovered at the Under-18’s with Boomers Matthew Dellavedova and Patty Mills as well as Opals Liz Cambage and Sara Blicavs competing in the tournament in the past.

For that reason, the Under-18’s holds great significance in the Australian basketball pathway while the Kevin Coombs Cup is the only national competition for wheelchair basketballers that enables players to represent their state.

“It is fantastic to see the Junior Championships return to Geelong, a city with a rich history in Victorian basketball,” said Basketball Australia Competitions Manager, Paul Maley.

“Home to a former NBL club, the Geelong Supercats, and now a very successful SEABL team whose women won the 2017 SEABL Championship, fans will be treated to a great and exciting tournament over eight days in Geelong.”

The Geelong Arena will host all games of the tournaments on their four courts including their main court which boasts 2,000 seats.

The Australian Boomers and Opals have played at The Geelong Arena in the past while pool stage matches of the Commonwealth Games were also staged there.

Next year will see the Under-18’s men’s tournament return to Geelong for the first time since 1977, a tournament that featured five-time NBL Champion and Basketball Australia CEO (2009-2012) Larry Sengstock as well as Australian Basketball Hall of Famer Patrick Hunt.

It will be the first time the Under-18 women and Kevin Coombs Cup will be held in Geelong with the three tournaments having been run concurrently since 2010.

“Basketball Geelong is honoured to be hosting both tournaments at the Geelong Arena," said Dean Anglin, Basketball Geelong Chief Executive Officer.

“We look forward to delivering the athletes and spectators an amazing event like we did with the Under-16’s in 2014."
