GLIDERS CLAIM BRONZE AT WORLD SUPER CUP

The Australian Gliders have enjoyed a strong tournament in Germany, claiming the bronze medal at the World Super Cup in their first leg of a two-tournament trip.

Facing host nation Germany in their first game, Australia jumped out to a 9-0 lead on the back of some stellar defence.

The Germans settled following that blistering start but the Gliders still held a 24-20 lead at the main break and their defence stepped up again in the third period with a smaller line-up, extending their advantage by one.

In the final term, Germany gave one last run but Australia were able to hold on for a two-point win as Amber Merritt top-scored with 14 points and captain Leanne Del Toso added eight with every player hitting the court.

"I am extremely happy with the Gliders efforts and how we stuck to the process and the structures to grind out a solid first up win," said coach David Gould following the game.

"Given this was our first game since the Osaka Cup in February, I am very happy that the girls again showed they are more than comfortable at this elite level."

The following day, Australia faced a double-header with the Netherlands, bronze medallists in Rio, up first.

Using varied combinations, Cobi Crispin stood out for the Gliders as the main play-maker while she also dominated on the scoreboard alongside Georgia Inglis and Sarah Vinci as Australia fell, 40-52.

Later that afternoon, Australia played Germany again with the host nation pulling away late to get their revenge in a 58-49 win despite Sarah Stewart (14 points) and Merritt (12 points) hitting double-figures in scoring.

In their final game of the tournament, the Gliders were unable to bounce back against the Netherlands, dropping a 35-69 contest but once again, coach Gould was able to try out many different combinations on the court with every player receiving court time.

The Aussies are now headed straight to England for the Continental Clash where they will again take on Germany as well as Japan and Great Britain.
