GLIDERS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT BRONZE MEDAL TO COMPLETE EUROPEAN TOUR

The Australian Gliders have finished with a victory at the Continental Clash, defeating Japan to secure the bronze medal and complete their European tour.

On Thursday night, the Gliders faced a Semi-Final clash against Germany but after a quick start by the opposition, Australia struggled to get back into the contest.

They trailed by nine at quarter-time and 15 at half-time but an impressive third term from the Gliders helped eat into that margin before they fell, 51-71.

Australia was able to give important court time to their entire roster though with this tournament about more than just results as they prepare for the AOZ qualifiers later this year.

Amber Merritt led them off the bench with 23 points in 22 minutes and Cobi Crispin (12 points) joined her in double-figures while Georgia Inglis recorded two steals and a block.

The following day, the Gliders took on Japan for the bronze medal and it was a tighter game from the outset with Australia trailing by just one at quarter-time.

Their defensive intensity ramped up in the second period, flowing into their offence as they took a lead into the main break and then the Gliders took control of the contest in the third term, holding Japan to just nine points.

In the final quarter, Japan were relentless, cutting the margin to a single possession several times but the Gliders held them off through Georgia Munro-Cook (six points, four rebounds) and Leanne Del Toso (ten points, three steals) to secure a 59-47 victory.

Merritt added another 19 points in 18 minutes while Cobi Crispin (14 points, ten rebounds, nine assists) shone and for her efforts throughout the tournament, she was named in the All-Star Five.

The Continental Clash bronze medal follows a bronze medal at the World Super Cup earlier this week with the two international tournaments further providing experience for the team in the lead-up to the AOZ qualifiers in November.
