Providing the first true opportunity for junior Australian athletes to represent their state at an elite competition, the Under-16’s is a vital aspect of the pathway while also giving the athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of national team coaches.
Hosting their first ever junior basketball Championship, Sunshine Coast will welcome approximately 28 teams from every state and territory while a New Zealand representative team also featured last year.
In front of their home fans, Qld South will be aiming to maintain their recent success after the Under-16 Boys claimed the silver medal in 2017 while the Under-16 Girls were victorious in 2015.
“The bid process was very competitive for the Under-16’s but we are delighted to bring the tournament to the Sunshine Coast for the first time”, said Renee Narcis, Australian Junior Championships Manager.
“University of Sunshine Coast Basketball have excellent facilities and their close partnership with the council and University will lead to a fantastic and successful event.”
“We have some of the top facilities that I’ve seen now with the upgrade of the University stadium and the four-court stadium in Caloundra which means we are comfortable hosting any competition,” said Rip City’s Leon Williamson.
“In addition to the facilities, the Sunshine Coast provides an idyllic location and beautiful weather for the families attending as well as a great range of entertainment options,” said Narcis.
“All the Under-16’s have parents and brothers and sisters that will travel to the Sunshine Coast, they’ll compete in the Junior Championships, and then they will go on and continue to have a holiday,” O’Pray said.
